What is an educational developer’s portfolio?

The educational developer’s portfolio (Stanley, 2001; Wright & Miller, 2000) provides a mechanism for educational developers to document, reflect upon, and use as a tool to navigate an educational development career within and across varied institutional and regional contexts. This type of portfolio provides evidence of impact of the work in which individual educational developers engage. It also provides a forum to demonstrate the beliefs and values that guide their practices and approaches to educational development.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Institute, participants should be able to:

  • explain the similarities and differences between teaching and educational developer portfolios
  • assess their level of knowledge, skills, and attributes for their current career stage;
  • identify areas of growth and sources of professional support for ongoing career development and progression;
  • articulate in writing their educational development philosophy statement
  • describe what they do in their educational development practice, how, and why
  • identify artifacts and potential feedback mechanisms to provide evidence and impact of their practice
  • complete a working draft of their portfolio
